Set money and time limits before playing

How to limit spending and time beforehand, and where to look for support if stopping is difficult.

Quick answer

Choose an amount and a stopping time before playing. Do not raise them for a bonus or to recover losses.

Before real-money play, decide how much you could lose entirely without affecting essential expenses, and when you will finish. If you have no spare money for this, the budget is zero. You can read the site and learn about games without depositing.

Choose the limit beforehand

During play, it is easy to find reasons to continue: an offer is ending, a bonus feature has not appeared or you want to win back losses. That is why it helps to choose the amount and time in advance. Limits restrict actions, but do not remove the risk of losing money.

Deposits, stakes and losses are three different totals

Suppose you deposit ₽1,000. Some payouts are played again, producing ₽3,000 in total stakes and ₽2,600 in payouts. The remaining balance is ₽600. Deposits total ₽1,000, stake turnover is ₽3,000 and the net game result is −₽400. Calling all three “spending” obscures the difference.

A deposit limit restricts deposits, but not necessarily the total stakes funded by payouts. Read the definition of any loss limit: how it treats withdrawals, bonus funds and unfinished rounds, and when the period resets. If your own plan is to lose no more than ₽400, reaching that amount means stopping even with money left in the account.

Writing down a plan

A fictional example: ‘For the month: ₽1,500. Per session: no more than ₽300 and 30 minutes. I will not use money for essential expenses. I will stop at whichever limit comes first and make no further deposit that day.’

This illustrates how to write a plan; it is not a recommended amount. Your limit may be lower or zero. Include the period, amount, time and what you have decided to do when the limit is reached.

Be clear about what you count: deposits, total bets or losses. Ten bets of ₽30 create ₽300 in wagering, but payouts may make the losses different. Do not redefine a limit during play to justify continuing.

Account settings to check

Look for financial limits, time reminders, breaks and self-exclusion. Check when a setting takes effect and how it can be lowered or raised. British RTS 12 describes several types of financial limits, but their availability at another operator must be checked separately. Source

If the game has no reminder, you can use a phone timer. Leave full screen when it sounds and end the session. You do not need to wait for a bonus round before stopping.

If you want to raise the amount or extend the time

Wanting another deposit to recover losses is a reason to stop. So is using money you had not planned to spend to finish wagering before an offer ends. A bonus does not oblige you to continue.

Pay attention if you hide spending, use money for essentials, repeatedly play longer than planned or cannot follow your decision to stop. You can seek help before serious debts develop.

Switching to a ‘calmer’ slot does not address difficulty controlling play. In that situation, it is more useful to stop, restrict access and speak to a specialist or someone you trust.

Breaks, blocking tools and self-exclusion

A break usually suspends access temporarily under the operator’s rules. Self-exclusion has its own duration, coverage and return process. Read them before activating it: blocking one account may not cover other sites.

You can combine available tools: blocking gambling sites on devices, bank payment restrictions and unsubscribing from marketing. Availability depends on the country and service; one setting does not close every route back to play.

GamCare provides information about spending, blocking tools, self-exclusion and support. Its main services are intended for Great Britain. Elsewhere, check availability and the language of support. Source

If gambling is becoming harder to control, stop and seek support. Looking for another bonus can wait.

Key points

  1. Your budget

Money for housing, food, bills and other commitments is not part of it. Choosing no gambling budget is fine too.

  2. Account settings

Check what a limit covers, its period and products, how it can be changed and whether a pause is available.

  3. If stopping is difficult

Take a break. Consider blocking tools, self-exclusion and suitable support.

Questions on this topic

Does a limit make gambling safe?

No. It restricts some actions, but the risk of losing money remains.

Does self-exclusion with one operator cover every site?

Not necessarily. Check the procedure’s scope. Wider blocking may require additional tools.

How do deposit and loss limits differ?

The first restricts payments into the account over a period; the second restricts losses as defined by the operator. Time may have a separate limit. Also check how long setting changes take, how to disable bonus notifications, and the options for breaks and self-exclusion.
